I don’t really have much to talk about this week in regards to actual “progress” because I’ve spent a lot of time either refactoring current systems or working on new building art.
I began the week attempting to bring some more scope to the building mode by drawing up some new building designs, only to then get caught in a whirlwind of new tips on colouring, detailing and… uh… roof-ing. What I thought would be a single task that I figured would only take about two or three hours became a task that was spread over about three days.
Fortunately the new store designs don’t stray too far from their previous iteration but I wasn’t happy with the scale of them in relation to the adventurers, I’m much happier with the new design and I’ve tried to add some kind of detailing based on the store type (part of the reason it took so long). I’m especially proud of the Cafe as it took an entire work day to produce, but I think it’s actually more towards what I really want most of the service buildings to look like. I’ll be using this kind of building model from now on.
The new addition of these stores caused me to begin work on updating the way that Adventurers interact with your Kingdom. I’ve developed a new system of “needs” for adventurers that causes them to leave the Kingdom once they’re unhappy or tired. I’m toying around with the idea of there being no real limit to the amount you can have in your Kingdom at once anymore, but the challenge is to try and keep them in your Kingdom for as long as possible by giving them the resources to maintain their needs. This means that in order to keep them happy and in your Kingdom you’ll have to keep placing resources that they need and to do that you’ll need to continue doing quests and growing your Kingdom level, finally melding the Building and Questing mechanic together.
There’s a much nicer UI I’ve drafted for an Adventurers Info Box. I’ll probably add in a thoughts/commentary section to replace the old speech bubble text.
I’ve also updated the emote system from the previous update to show what Adventurers are looking for or when they’re unhappy.
Apart from this most of the work on the game this week has been “under-the-hood” improvements reworking older code to handle better with some of the new features of the game. The good news is that I’m actually at a point where I’m looking to meet the deadline of having a new build up by the end of the month. If all goes to plan, I’ll be working on even more new buildings next week and should hopefully be at a point where I’m able to show off some of the new changes to the game in a video update.
I’ve also designed some new roads. I’m not sure when I’ll get around to putting them in the game though.
As always thanks for the support!
Until next time,
Matt
